WELCOME TO THE PARENT EXPRESS
Hello there! This is me, Sonia, and I am pleased that you could join me on this journey on The Parent Express. I created this blog to help inspire busy parents and carers with quick, easy-to-read Top 10 lists.
I never intended to write a blog, in fact, until recently I didn’t even know what the point of a blog was. It all started when I became a working Mum and I found that I was spending countless hours on my commute researching my latest parenting dilemma. Be it what to cook the kids for dinner (given the limited contents of my fridge) to what could I do with the kids on a rainy day. I would obsessively read blogs, websites, reviews and then look at price comparison sites. I would then summarise my research in a Top 10 list in order to make a decision.
My dream was to find a website that summarised the answers to all my parenting dilemmas in inspirational, short Top 10 lists. But, it didn’t exist so I decided to take matters into my own hands and created The Parent Express.
So who am I? I thought it would only be fitting to tell you a little about myself in a Top 10 list.
1. I AM A MUM
I have two wonderful girls (aged four and two) who fill my life with joy and sometimes horror (particularly during my two-year-olds recent potty training regression). They have very different personalities so all the lessons I learnt from my elder do not apply to my younger so they certainly keep me on my toes. They are great fun and are a constant reminder for me to appreciate the small things in life. Little do they know but they are also the inspiration for my Top 10 lists and blog posts.
2. I HAVE AN OBSESSION WITH LISTS
Always have. Always will. Particularly Top 10 lists. I write lists for everything. If it’s not in a list, it’s not worth knowing about.
3. IN MY PREVIOUS LIFE I WAS AN . . .
Accountant. After 20 years of creating complex yet beautiful Excel spreadsheets (which incidentally I still love), I decided that it was time for a change as I wanted to do something more creative. I also felt it was time to give something back and do something that would help others.
4. I SING IN A CHOIR
Every Tuesday night I spend 90 minutes singing with my choir in South London. We sing an eclectic mix of pop songs from David Bowie through to Florence & the Machine. I love it. It is my ‘me’ time. I forget about the laundry piling up or the homework that I forgot to do with my daughter and I just sing my heart out (even though sometimes I forget the words). It really is THE best way to relax.
5. I LOVE TO BAKE
Whilst my husband is the chef in our house, I am the baker. I love getting covered in flour (especially if the girls are involved) and producing little sweet delights for friends, family and colleagues. Whilst I enjoy trying out new recipes, my favourites are the ‘classics’ such as lemon drizzle and cherry cake.
6. I ENJOY HUNTING DOWN ‘GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY’
If I find something I want to buy I will spend a considerable amount of time ensuring that not only I am buying the ‘best’ thing for my needs, but also whether I am getting the best value for money. It is bordering on obsessive. I just can’t bear the thought of buying something only to find I could get something better and/or cheaper elsewhere.
7. I DON’T LIKE YELLOW CARS AND HEATHER SMALL’S VOICE.
No idea why. There are not many things in this world I don’t like. My ‘dislike’ list used to include aubergine, mushrooms and coffee but now I like all of those things. I have even been known to enjoy a brussel sprout or two at Christmas, so all that is left in my Room 101 is yellow cars and Heather Small’s voice. My dislike is so strong that I couldn’t even bear to pollute this page with an image of a yellow car.
8. I AM THE WORLD’S WORST LIAR
I don’t agree with lying but I appreciate how being able to tell the occasional white lie can be useful. My problem is that I just can’t do it. For you, the reader of my website, this means that you are in good hands as all reviews and lists will be honest and true. However, for anyone playing Poker with me I am a dead give away.
9. I CAN’T HEAR
A source of great amusement in my house. Whilst I have not been officially diagnosed, I do have problems hearing and often mistake what someone is saying
10. MY CHILDREN WERE BORN AT HOME
My elder daughter was due on the day of the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics. As we live in London I was petrified about getting stuck in Olympic traffic en route to hospital. In fact, I was so scared that the thought of giving birth at home was preferable to potentially giving birth in an Uber. So we opted for a homebirth. All went well, although I understand there was a bit of a clear up operation afterwards. I didn’t care, I was too busy cuddling my new baby and drinking a well-earned cup of tea. I was blessed that the second birth also went without a hitch.
So now you know a little bit about me along with my obsession with lists.
