The kids will be back to school before you know it so if last year’s bag is looking a bit worse for wear then check out my Top 10 School Bags for young children.

If your child is starting reception this September and you are trying to decide between a book bag or a rucksack then let me share my thoughts.

We tried a book bag for a term but we found it a bit too small and narrow. A rucksack is more practical, particularly in terms of carrying it, which, in the early days, you will be doing most of the time.

You don’t need a big one as the kids are only small. But you do need a bag big enough to hold a water bottle, a change of clothes, a couple of reading books, a homework book, any art work they want to bring home and in the summer, a hat and some suncream. You could always try and squeeze in a PE kit but I always found it easier to send it in a separate bag. You may also need space for a packed lunch if you aren’t opting for the free school meals.
