Our lounge has become overrun with toys again. It seems that as soon as I get the ever growing collection of toys under control a new batch arrives due to a birthday or a generous Granny.
Our living area is open-plan, so we don’t have a room where we can shut the door to all the Peter Rabbit and Paw Patrol paraphernalia. Instead, after the kids have gone to bed we snuggle up on the sofa in the evening only to be closely watched by Squirrel Nutkin and Skye. It is slightly unnerving.
In order to take control of our space again (well, at least in the evenings) I am on a mission to find some grown up looking storage baskets in which to hide all the toys. My other pre-requisite is that the storage basket has to be large (at least L39 x W39 x H39cm). I already have one of a similar size in my younger daughter’s room and you can get so much in it. See picture below. It includes 5 dolls, 4 soft toys, a lobster, a tractor and lots more.
Here are my Top 10 Toy storage baskets. And yes, most of them are laundry baskets that are being put to use elsewhere.
1. Ivory Felt Baskets, set of three, Nordic House
For: Simple Scandinavian chic
What: Three ivory thick felt baskets with handles. Finished with a contrasting grey stitch that gives a stripey appearance from a distance. They are made with a 05.cm polymer felt that is robust enough to withstand toys and clawing hands. A beautiful natural looking basket that will work in any room of the house. Whilst this is more than I would normally want to spend, the fact that there are three of them makes it rather good value in my book.
Size: Small L30 x W24 x H31cm, medium L36 x W28 x H36cm and large L41 x W32 x H40cm
2. Grey felted baskets, set of three, Cox & Cox
For: Good value for money and good looks
What: Three plain grey felt storage baskets with handles. Excellent value for money and good sized baskets that will hold lots.
Size: Small W30 x H34cm, Medium W35 x H37 cm and large W41cm x H41cm
3. Quilted storage basket, Minene
For: Award winning toy storage
What: Minene has a wide selection of quilted storage baskets in 4 sizes and 8 different colours. You can opt for plains, checks, stripes, stars, florals or spots. I love that with some of the baskets the inside is in a different fabric to the outside. As well as buying the baskets individually you can also buy a set of two (large and small) for £38, saving £4. You can either buy directly from Minene (free shipping over £75) or from one of their stockists such as John Lewis, although the department stores tend to have a smaller range.
Size: Large W40 x H45cm
4. Baobab storage bag with drawstring, Nobodinoz
For: Style and practicality
What: Incredibly stylish toy storage bags from a Spanish brand called Nobodinoz. These fabric storage bags have a practical drawstring to hide away all the toys after lights out. They come in a wonderful array of colourful, geometric prints. To see the whole range buy directly from Nobodinoz, however, bearing in mind that they are based in Barcelona, delivery might be expensive. Alternatively, you can buy from one of their UK stockists such as Molly & Meg.
Size: Large W42 x H42 X D42cm
5. Natural striped basket nesting set, set of three, JoJo Maman Bebe
For: Classic neutral storage
What: Three natural striped baskets with faux leather handles. The neutral colours mean that these baskets will complement any room. When not in use the baskets fit inside one another.
Size: Small H30 x D30cm, medium H35 x D40cm, large H40 x D50cm
6. Blue and cream/red and cream striped storage tub, The Alphabet Gift Shop
For: New England style
What: A round blue and cream striped storage tub made out of sturdy woven acrylic canvas complete with strong rope handles. The tub can be personalised for an extra £5 however, personally, I think it looks much better without.
Size: H39 x D39cm
7. Green and white chevron striped laundry hampers, set of 2, Very
For: An injection of colour
What: Handwoven from sustainable palm leaf, these baskets, which have been finished in a bright green and white geometric print, will add a pop of colour to any room. Also available in two other colours, blue and red.
Size: Large W35cm x H44 x D35
Price: £25 (At the time of writing these were also reduced from £25 to £23)
8. Gray and Willow rope laundry bin, House of Fraser
What: A neutral white rope basket with grey striped stitching plus handles. The tallest of all the baskets listed here means that you can get a lot more in.
Size: H46 x D39cm
9. Rectangular striped toy storage bag, A place for Everything
For: Good value
What: A rectangular striped storage bag with rope handles. Available in two-tone blue stripes or pink and green stripes. Excellent value for money at only £6.
Size: W50cm x H36 x D35
10. Raffia and seagrass baskets, set of two, Marks and Spencer
For: Natural look
What: A set of two round baskets made of natural fibres (raffia and seagrass). The baskets are natural and white with handles and a white tassel. If you did not want to spend this much then you can buy a single basket for £25.
Size: Small H37 x D29cm, Large H42 x D37cm
Other worthy contenders
- Hennes has some great alternatives starting from £12.99 (size H40 x W33cm) however given that they are made from plastic polyester I was not convinced they would last as long as some of the baskets listed above.
